9a1c3f9405 rename 'disc' as 'memory' 
the old 'disc' flag to open defaulted TRUE and disabled read via disc if you
set it FALSE, which was very confusing

replace it with a flag called 'memory' which defaults FALSE and forces
read via memory if set TRUE

'disc' is still there and still works, it's just tagged as deprecated

7b64246af2 fix a couple of issues with huge profiles 
The base64 encode limit was 1MB, but some huge profiles can get over
that, so it's now 10MB.

transform_save_string_blob() was incorrectly setting a refstring not a
blob as an error fallback, potentially leaving a dangling pointer.

942b0446a3 revise fail handling, again 
clarify policy on file read errors and warnings:

* if the file format library reports a warning, we log it in vips, but
that's all
* if the file format library reports an error, we log it, but try to
continue
* if the file format library reports an error and fail is set, we log it
and fail

all loaders now implement this

we had INT as the default, but this will cause serious precision loss
with many masks ... instead, have float (always correct) as the default

7938903d22 don't size caches by image width 
we were sizing buffers partly by image width, which could cause caches

205fb817e8 change three C API funcs to match Python/C++/CLI 
vips_math2_const(), vips_boolean_const() and vips_relational_const() had
the const and oper args reversed from the Python/CLI/C++ API

add something to check for arg priority conflicts and resolve the
conflicts it found

4bbd56fb0a handle transparency in vips_region_shrink() 
we weren't multiplying through alpha in vips_region_shrink(), causing
fringing on pyramids with transparent elements

7136053451 sort max/min results by y and x coordinate 
previously the list of maxima or minima found by max/min were in found
order, so essentially random

they now sort equal values by y then x coordinate, so the results are
consistent between runs, provided there are fewer maxima / minima than
are being tracked

36761bcfd7 make vips_gaussnoise() pixels reproducible 
previously, pixel values were regenerated on every calculation, so they
changed on recomputation

pixel values are now generated from the pixel (x, y) coordinate plus a per-call
seed

fa3c92c19b add CLAHE 
vips_hist_local() has a new param, max_slope, which sets the maximum
amount that the local contrast can be boosted by -- CLAHE

- scale by 255, not 256, to avoid an overflow

--vips-cache-max, --vips-cache-max-memory and --vips-cache-max-files were not
working and probably hadn't been for a while

vipsthumbnail.c turns off the operation cache, it's not useful for
the same operation repeated across many files

works from py, but not ruby, I guess gchar** isn't a supported type for
ruby-gnome

88148318eb fix performance regression 
the extra check on bandfmt in sizeof() in 8.3.2 was causing some performance
problems ... move the check to file read, so we only do it once
per image, not once per pixel or scanline

65105a9442 upsize with something other than nearest 
vips_resize() uses to just use nearest when upsizing, following standard
practice in repro. This is often unfortunate for image processing, where
small nearest upsizes will produce obvious aliasing.

It now picks a VipsInterpolate which corresponds (roughly) to the
selected VipsKernel and uses that with affine for any upsizing.

final 200 - 300% with vips_reduce(). This was correct for lanczos2/3,
but not right for linear/cubic, which need more shrink and less
reduce to avoid aliasing.

This patch makes vips_resize() leave the final 100 - 200% to
vips_reduce() for linear/cubic, and leave everything to reduce for
nearest.

when you write to a non-partial image, you create a sink ... so
vips_image_write() only needs to ref the input when writing to partials

b90145ca31 free pixel buffers on image close 
We were freeing pixel buffers on thread exit. This was convenient, but
meant that main thread buffers were not freed until program exit. As a
result, long-running programs which created main thread buffers would
slowly fill the operation cache with useless junk, forcing everything else out.

This change also frees pixel buffers on image close. This makes the
cache work much better in long-running programs, and can substantially
reduce memory use.

54d8e4808f restore bandfmt after unpremultiply in thumbnail 
vips_unpremultiply() always outputs float. If you save the output of
vipsthumbnail to a format that supports float files, like tiff, it won't
ever get cast back to the source format.

Example:

	$ vipsheader Opera-icon-high-res.png
	Opera-icon-high-res.png: 3056x3325 uchar, 4 bands, srgb, pngload
	$ vipsthumbnail Opera-icon-high-res.png -o x.tif
	$ vipsheader x.tif
	x.tif: 117x128 float, 4 bands, scrgb, tiffload

This change makes it note and restore BandFmt aropund pre/unpremultiply.

we had a custom wrapper for bandjoin(), but bandrank(), a function with
an almost identical interface, did not ... this was confusing

bandrank() now has a custom wrapper too ... this breaks API
unfortunately, but hopefully very few people were using this thing and
it's better to make this change as soon as possible

25c3c49d1c better handling of cast+shift for non-int formats 
before, im.cast(uchar, shift = true) where im was float and tagged as
rgb16 would not shift the image, since it's unclear how much to shift a float
type by

now we do two casts: first, we guess the numeric range from the
interpretation, so rgb16 would be ushort, so we cast float->ushort;
second, we cast to the target type and do the shift on the way

ef6d8f5979 make test for matlab files more specific 
Previously vips just called Mat_Open() to test if a file was a Matlab
save file, but this is rather unreliable. For example, some JPEG files
can crash libmatio, and it can incorrectly think that at least some JP2
files are Matlab save files.

Instead, look for "MATLAB 5.0" at the start of the file. This is really too
specific, the first 116 bytes of a Matlab save file are freeform text,
but in practice all Matlab writers use the first few bytes to record the
file type.

3b32200cc1 sizealike() and friends elide completely 
sizealike() / formatalike() and bandsalike() used to just vips_copy() if
the image didn't need any changes ... this was fast, but left a
vips_copy_gen() in the pipeline, wasting a lot of space on the C stack
during recursion.

They now vanish completely if the image is already in the right format.
Since we call them before most image processing operations, and
often all three of them, this saves a lot of C stack, more than x2 even
in simple cases.

There might also be a measureable CPU saving if the operations are very
simple (eg. insert).

66fe338d36 better alpha handling for tiff save 
the tiff saver was writing all five-band images as CMYKA, even if they
were tagged as srgb ... it now follows the interpretation tag and will
write many alpha channels instead

64d081e726 return default value for unset props 
we used to issue a warning and return early, but this can leave garbage
in the *value pointer, I think

ruby gobject-introspection will walk object props during GC and can see
state inbetween init and build when not all objects have been given a
value ... we don't want these warnings

change exif names again: we were storing under @title, but that's both
subject to i18n, and unlookupable in libexif

we now use @name, which is not subject to i18n and can be searched for
... this will break most code which expects certain exif tag names

also, when we update exif, allow any tag, not just updates to existing

366e7e3a5e add gobject to Requires: line 
vips C and C++ programs can link directly against things in gobject
without appearing to, for example:

	a = VIPS_OBJECT( b );

the macro will expand to include a g_type_check_instance_is_a(). So we
have to have gobject-2.0 in the link line of things like:

	g++ -g -Wall hello8.cc `pkg-config vips-cpp --cflags --libs`

6e2135d8b5 mask builders take prec, not integer 
vips_gaussmat() and vips_logmat() used to default to float, but
vips_conv() defaulted to int ... so this failed:

	vips gaussmat m.v 2 0.1 --separable
	vips convsep k2.jpg x.jpg m.v

since we were using a small float mask with an integer convolution

This change makes everything int by default, with gaussmat having a new
param called --precision whose arg can be int or float.

The old @integer param is deprecated.

sorry :-(

The old param (passing sigma*2 as an int) were just too confusing
coming from other packages. This new behaviour matches ImageMagick, and
almost everyone else in the world.

A new optional param lets you set the minimum amplitude as well.

e9ce212b62 make out of order read a fatal error 
For png and jpg, out of order must always be a fatal error, since you
can't read from a specific y position.

This was a g_assert() before which meant that this test was missing from
production builds. It's now always a fatal error.

004c98f296 pngsave interlaced makes a copy of the image 
interlaced png is hard to write: you have to make seven passes over the
image to make the whole file. It advertises itself as sequential, it
needs to only ake a single pass. Therefore, it must take a copy in
memory of the image to write.

594af28c8e remove support for seq mode read for extract etc. 
see comment in sequential

We used to not stall if the read position was zero, ie. if the first
request was for a line some way down the image, and assume this was
extract or somesuch. But this could sometimes break on busy, many-core
systems.

Think of a better way to support eg.  extract safely in sequential mode.

acbb77ac40 add "rgbjpeg" flag to tiffsave 
add a secret "rgbjpeg" flag to tiffsave to help IIPImage server

iipimage server 0.9.9 and earlier don't handle YCbCr-coded JPEG tiffs
correctly ... setting --rgbjpeg makes vips output RGB coded JPEG tiff
which iipsrv can handle.

Using this flag makes files 2x to 3x larger with no quality improvement,
so it is tagged as deprecated to keep it hidden.

bbd5cbfb44 add vips_thread_shutdown() 
You now need to call vips_thread_shutdown() from all threads you create
yourself just before they exit. This gives vips a chance to free any
thread-private memory and to write out profiling data. libvips will
complain noisily if you fail to do this. You can harmlessly call
vips_thread_shutdown() more than once if you wish.

libvips will call vips_thread_shutdown for you automatically for the main
thread (the one that calls vips_shutdown()) and for threads it creates
directly itself.

88b2f4350d better cache sizing in unbuffered sequential mode 
Previously we only ever had a single tile of cache in unbuffered mode.
This could break with many threads, if thread requests crossed tile
boundaries.

Now have one tile per thread, plus a bit for slop.

3dce5951c2 reverse similarity rotation direction convention 
The rest of vips uses +ve-is-clockwise convention, like almost all image
processing packages. The new similarity operator was mistakenly using the
mathematical +ve-is-anticlockwise convention, oops.

They are now combined in the single vips_image_pipeline() call.

b20a9f78dd faster --centre logic for dzsave 
don't test pixel-by-pixel for background tiles, instead track the rect
of real pixels and test for intersection

this might help performance scaling on many-core CPUs since we are no
longer spinning up a threadgroup for each output tile
