1b82f1c749 tcp_input: snd_wnd processing
* Do not accept the window in old segments.
Implement SND.WL1/WL2 things in the RFC.

* Do not accept the window in the segment w/o ACK bit set.
The window is an offset from the ack seq.
(maybe it's simpler to just drop segments w/o ACK though)

* Subtract snd_wnd by the amount of the ack advancement.

1d3594ba07 tcp_send_buffered.c: Fix broken retransmit
With an applictation using mbedtls, I observed retransmitted segments
with corrupted user data, detected by the peer tls during mac processing.

Looking at the packet dump, I suspect that a wrb which has been put back
onto the write_q for retransmission was partially sent but fully acked.
Note: it's normal for a retransmission to be acked before sent.

In that case, the bug fixed in this commit would cause the wrb have
a wrong sequence number, possibly the same as the next wrb. It matches
what I saw in the packet dump. That is, the broken segments contain the
payload identical to one of the previous segment.

09f3a1ec8e tcp_send_buffered: throttle IOB allocations for send
Consider a bi-directional TCP connection:

1. we use all IOBs for tx queue
2. we advertize zero recv window because we have no free IOBs
3. if the peer tcp does the same thing,
both sides advertize zero window and can not drain the tx queue.

For a similar stall to happen, the peer doesn't need to be
a naive tcp implementation like nuttx. A naive application blocking
on send() without draining its read buffer is enough.
(Probably such an application should be fixed to drain rx even
when tx is full. However, it's another story.)

This commit avoids the situation by prevent tx from grabbing
the all IOBs in the first place. (assuming CONFIG_IOB_THROTTLE > 0)

906cb8b0f4 net/tcp: tcp_sendfile need restore the file location at the end
quote from https://man7.org/linux/man-pages/man2/sendfile.2.html:
If offset is not NULL, then it points to a variable holding the
file offset from which sendfile() will start reading data from
in_fd. When sendfile() returns, this variable will be set to the
offset of the byte following the last byte that was read. If
offset is not NULL, then sendfile() does not modify the file
offset of in_fd; otherwise the file offset is adjusted to reflect
the number of bytes read from in_fd.
If offset is NULL, then data will be read from in_fd starting at
the file offset, and the file offset will be updated by the call.

The change also align with the implementation at:

669619a06a tcp_close: Fix a race with passive close
tcp_close disposes the connection immediately if it's called in
TCP_LAST_ACK. If it happens, we will end up with responding the
last ACK with a RST.

This commit fixes it by making tcp_close wait for the completion
of the passive close.

08e9dff0e9 tcp_close: disable send callback before sending FIN
This fixes connection closing issues with CONFIG_NET_TCP_WRITE_BUFFERS.

Because TCP_CLOSE is used for both of input and output for tcp_callback,
the close callback and the send callback confuses each other as
the following. As it effectively disposes the connection immediately,
we end up with responding to the consequent ACK and FIN/ACK from the peer
with RSTs.

tcp_timer
    -> tcp_close_eventhandler
returns TCP_CLOSE (meaning an active close)
    -> psock_send_eventhandler
called with TCP_CLOSE from tcp_close_eventhandler, misinterpet as
        a passive close.
        -> tcp_lost_connection
            -> tcp_shutdown_monitor
                -> tcp_callback
                    -> tcp_close_eventhandler
                        misinterpret TCP_CLOSE from itself as
                        a passive close

98e7c6924d tcp: always responds to keep-alive segments
* It doesn't make sense to have this conditional on our own
  SO_KEEPALIVE support. (CONFIG_NET_TCP_KEEPALIVE)
Actually we don't have a control on the peer tcp stack,
who decides to send us keep-alive probes.

* We should respond them for non ESTABLISHED states. eg. FIN_WAIT_2

4878b7729c tcp: simplify readahead
Do not bother to preserve segment boundaries in the tcp
readahead queues.

* Avoid wasting the tail IOB space for each segments.
Instead, pack the newly received data into the tail space
of the last IOB. Also, advertise the tail space as
  a part of the window.

* Use IOB chain directly. Eliminate IOB queue overhead.

* Allow to accept only a part of a segment.

* This change improves the memory efficiency.
And probably more importantly, allows less-confusing
  recv window advertisement behavior.
Previously, even when we advertise N bytes window,
we often couldn't actually accept N bytes. Depending on
the segment sizes and IOB configurations, it was causing
  segment drops.
Also, the previous code was moving the right edge of the
window back and forth too often, even when nothing in
the system was competing on the IOBs. Shrinking the
window that way is a kinda well known recipe to confuse
  the peer stack.

* Fixes the case where the window was small but not zero.

* tcp_recvfrom: Remove tcp_ackhandler. Instead, simply schedule TX for

* Replace rcv_wnd (the last advertized window size value) with

rcv_wnd was complicated to deal with because its base (rcvseq) is
  also moving.

* tcp_appsend: Send a window update even if there are no other reasons
  to send an ack.
Namely, send an update if it increases the window by

45699e2701 net/tcp/tcp_input.c: Correct bad check of urgent data length
Urgent data preceded "normal" data in the TCP payload. If the urgent data is larger than the size of the TCP payload, this indicates that the entire payload is urgent data and that urgent data continues in the next packet.

This case was handled correctly for the case where urgent data was present but was not being handled correctly in the case where the urgent data was NOT present.

c2b0006dcd net/tcp: implement the fast retransmit
RFC2001: TCP Slow Start, Congestion Avoidance, Fast Retransmit,
         and Fast Recovery Algorithms

...

3. Fast Retransmit
Modifications to the congestion avoidance algorithm were proposed in
1990 [3]. Before describing the change, realize that TCP may
generate an immediate acknowledgment (a duplicate ACK) when an out-
of-order segment is received (Section 4.2.2.21 of [1], with a note
that one reason for doing so was for the experimental fast-
retransmit algorithm). This duplicate ACK should not be delayed.
The purpose of this duplicate ACK is to let the other end know that a
segment was received out of order, and to tell it what sequence
  number is expected.

Since TCP does not know whether a duplicate ACK is caused by a lost
segment or just a reordering of segments, it waits for a small number
of duplicate ACKs to be received. It is assumed that if there is
just a reordering of the segments, there will be only one or two
duplicate ACKs before the reordered segment is processed, which will
then generate a new ACK. If three or more duplicate ACKs are
received in a row, it is a strong indication that a segment has been
lost. TCP then performs a retransmission of what appears to be the
missing segment, without waiting for a retransmission timer to
  expire.

MSG_DONTWAIT (since Linux 2.2)
Enables nonblocking operation; if the operation would block, the

similar behavior to setting the O_NONBLOCK flag (via the fcntl(2)
F_SETFL operation), but differs in that MSG_DONTWAIT is a per-call
option, whereas O_NONBLOCK is a setting on the open file description
(see open(2)), which will affect all threads in the calling process
and as well as other processes that hold file descriptors referring
to the same open file description.

5c5c08efcd network: simplify the timeout process logic
1.Consolidate absolute to relative timeout conversion into one place(_net_timedwait)
2.Drive the wait timeout logic by net_timedwait instead of devif_timer

    Net cleanup (#17)

    * Fix the semaphore usage issue found in tcp/udp

    1. The count semaphore need disable priority inheritance
    2. Loop again if net_lockedwait return -EINTR
    3. Call nxsem_trywait to avoid the race condition
    4. Call nxsem_post instead of sem_post

    * Put the work notifier into free list to avoid the heap fragment in the long run. Since the allocation strategy is encapsulated internally, we can even refine the implementation later.

    * Network stack shouldn't allocate memory in the poll implementation to avoid the heap fragment in the long run, other modification include:

    1. Select MM_IOB automatically since ICMP[v6] socket can't work without the read ahead buffer
    2. Remove the net lock since xxx_callback_free already do the same thing
    3. TCP/UDP poll should work even the read ahead buffer isn't enabled at all

    * Add NET_ prefix for UDP_NOTIFIER and TCP_NOTIFIER option to align with other UDP/TCP option convention

    * Remove the unused _SF_[IDLE|ACCEPT|SEND|RECV|MASK] flags since there are code to set/clear these flags, but nobody check them.

5fd8f78bf9 net/ipforward, tcp, and udp: Fix a chicken and egg problem by eliminating the check of the arp/neighbor tables before packet transmission
1. For buffered tcp/udp case, if CONFIG_NET_ARP_SEND/CONFIG_NET_ARP_IPIN/CONFIG_NET_ICMPv6_NEIGHBOR isn't enabled and the table doesn't contain ip<->ethaddr mapping yet, the logic will skip the realtransmission and then arp/neighbor can't steal the final buffer to generate arp/icmpv6 packet.
2.for all other case, the tcp layer or user program should already contain the retransmit logic, the check is redundancy and may generate many duplicated packets if arp/icmpv6 response is too slow because the cursor stop forward. If user still concern about the very first packet lost, he could fix the issue by enabling CONFIG_NET_ARP_SEND/CONFIG_NET_ICMPv6_NEIGHBOR at begin.

124212624d net: Minor fix in error checking in TCP/UDP Tx drain logic 2019-07-28 07:39:55 -06:00
Gregory Nutt
361d85ae35 net/tcp and udp: Fix errors in the new implementation of SO_LINGER. The tcp_drain() and udp_drain() functions were casting the working argument to the wrong type, resulting in hangs and abnormal behavior. There is a complexity in the tcp drain logic when the remote peer closes the socket before all Tx data has been flushed. Sometimes we are not notified of this case and wait the entire timeout unnecessarily. There is a workaround in place in tcp_txdrain(), but this really should be revisited. 2019-07-27 10:26:52 -06:00

9d3148406c Signals were not a good choice of IPC to implement the poll function for several reasons: In order to handle the asynchrnous poll-related event, a substantial amount of state information is needed. Signals are only capable of passing minimal amounts of data. There are also complexities with performing kernel space signal handlers in kernel space code that is better to avoid. So, instead of signals, the equivalent logic was converted to run via a callback that executes on the high-priority work queue.
Squashed commit of the following:

Fix up some final compile isses.

net/netdev: Convert the network down notification logic to use the new wqueue-based notification factility.

net/udp: Convert the UDP readahead notification logic to use the new wqueue-based notification factility.

sched/wqueue: Signals are not good IPCs to support the target poll functionality for several reasons including the amount of data that can be passed with a signal and in the fact that in protected and kernel modes, user threads executing signal handlers in protected, kernel memory is problematic. Instead, convert the same logic to perform the notifications via function callback on the high priority work queue.

net/utils, tcp, include/net: Separate out the special IOB allocation logic and place it in its own function. Prototype is available in a public header file where it can also be used by network drivers.
    net/utils: net_timedwait() now uses new net_breaklock() and net_restorelock().

75cc19ebb4 net/tcp: Fix a deadlock condition that can occur when (1) all network logic runs on a single work queue, (1) TCP write buffering is enabled, and (2) we run out of IOBs. In this case, the TCP write buffering logic was blocking on iob_alloc() with the network locked. Since the network was locked, the device driver polls that would provide take the write buffer data and release the IOBs could not execute. This fixes the problem by unlocking the network lock while waiting for the IOBs. 2018-07-06 19:49:05 -06:00

22cd0d47fa This commit attempts remove some long standard confusion in naming and some actual problems that result from the naming confusion. The basic problem is the standard MTU does not include the size of the Ethernet header. For clarity, I changed the naming of most things called MTU to PKTSIZE. For example, CONFIG_NET_ETH_MTU is now CONFIG_NET_ETH_PKTSIZE.
This makes the user interface a little hostile. People thing of an MTU of 1500 bytes, but the corresponding packet is really 1514 bytes (including the 14 byte Ethernet header). A more friendly solution would configure the MTU (as before), but then derive the packet buffer size by adding the MAC header length. Instead, we define the packet buffer size then derive the MTU.

The MTU is not common currency in networking. On the wire, the only real issue is the MSS which is derived from MTU by subtracting the IP header and TCP header sizes (for the case of TCP). Now it is derived for the PKTSIZE by subtracting the IP header, the TCP header, and the MAC header sizes. So we should be all good and without the recurring 14 byte error in MTU's and MSS's.

Squashed commit of the following:

Trivial update to fix some spacing issues.
net/: Rename several macros containing _MTU to _PKTSIZE.
net/: Rename CONFIG_NET_SLIP_MTU to CONFIG_NET_SLIP_PKTSIZE and similarly for CONFIG_NET_TUN_MTU. These are not the MTU which does not include the size of the link layer header. These are the full size of the packet buffer memory (minus any GUARD bytes).
net/: Rename CONFIG_NET_6LOWPAN_MTU to CONFIG_NET_6LOWPAN_PKTSIZE and similarly for CONFIG_NET_TUN_MTU. These are not the MTU which does not include the size of the link layer header. These are the full size of the packet buffer memory (minus any GUARD bytes).
net/: Rename CONFIG_NET_ETH_MTU to CONFIG_NET_ETH_PKTSIZE. This is not the MTU which does not include the size of the link layer header. This is the full size of the packet buffer memory (minus any GUARD bytes).
net/: Rename the file d_mtu in the network driver structure to d_pktsize. That value saved there is not the MTU. The packetsize is the memory large enough to hold the maximum packet PLUS the size of the link layer header. The MTU does not include the link layer header.

Squashed commit of the following:

net/udp: Address most of the issues with UDP write buffering. There is a remaining issue with handling one network going down in a multi-network environment. None of this has been test but it is certainly ready for test. Hence, the feature is marked EXPERIMENTAL.

net/udp: Remove pesky write buffer macros.
Eliminate trailing space at the end of lines.

net/udp: Crude, naive port of the TCP write buffering logic into UDP. This commit is certainly non-functional and is simply a starting point for the implementatin of UDP write buffering.

cf5cba953d There was a possible recursion that could eventually overflow the stack. The error occurred when closing the socket with inet_close() while a socket callback was still queued. When the socket callback was executed by devif_conn_event(), this resulted in a call to psock_send_eventhandler() with TCP_CLOSE flag set which then called tcp_lost_connection(). tcp_shutdown_monitor() then called tcp_callback() again, which again called psock_send_eventhandler(), and so on.... In this configuration, the TCP connection's 'semi-permnanent' callback, s_sndcb was nullified in tcp_close_disconnect. However, other logic in tcp_lost_connection() attempt to use that callback reference after it was nullifed. Fixed in tcp_lost_connectino() by adding a NULL pointer change before the access. This commit backs out most of commit b4747286b1. That change was added because sem_wait() would sometimes cause cancellation points inappropriated. But with these recent changes, nxsem_wait() is used instead and it is not a cancellation point.

In the OS, all calls to sem_wait() changed to nxsem_wait(). nxsem_wait() does not return errors via errno so each place where nxsem_wait() is now called must not examine the errno variable.

In all OS functions (not libraries), change sem_wait() to nxsem_wait(). This will prevent the OS from creating bogus cancellation points and from modifying the per-task errno variable.

sched/semaphore: Add the function nxsem_wait(). This is a new internal OS interface. It is functionally equivalent to sem_wait() except that (1) it is not a cancellation point, and (2) it does not set the per-thread errno value on return.
